Master Gardener Recognition

Multiple awards were given to several Morgan County Master Gardeners at the recent West Virginia Master Gardener Conference held at the Mountaineer Racetrack and Conference Center in the Northern Panhandle. Once again, Morgan County was held high when three individuals received awards.

Cheryl Rink was recognized for her Community Demonstration Vegetable Garden in Great Cacapon. She helped others grow and harvest vegetables in her community.

Shirley Hillgren was recognized as the Outstanding County Master Gardener for 2006. Hilgren became a Master Gardener in 2001, but helped on projects before that! She has been Vice President of the Master Gardeners, and chaired the Plant Fair for two years establishing the groundwork for subsequent Plant Fairs. She created our logo, was one of the creators of (and sewed) our flower flags, created and sewed the aprons we use at the Plant Fair as well as the Master Gardeners logo pins that were given to everyone who attended the Master Gardeners state conference last year (2005). She has made many other contributions too numerous to mention.

Finally, Phyllis Hagstad was selected as the co-Master Gardener of the Year for West Virginia. She shared this honor with Lee Reger of Harrison County. Hagstad has been involved in so many gardening activities. She has coordinated the Master Gardener training program this year which is a very big job. It includes arranging for speakers and facilities, and she has taught sections of the course herself. She arranged for garden side chats and other educational programs during the year. She was a major contributor serving on the steering committee for the 2005 Master Gardener Conference held here at Cacapon State Park and was also a presenter. Her home gardens reflect her love and skills in gardening. She has also coordinated and volunteered to staff the Master Gardener educational booth at the Farmers Market this past year. She joins Larry Lower as former state Master Gardener of the Year.

Don and Marge Bozanic

Volunteers of the Year 2005
from
The Morgan Messenger, 21 March 2005

The Morgan County Master Gardeners selected Don and Marge Bozanic as their honorees for the Chamber of Commerce's 22nd Annual Community Volunteer Day.

Since becoming Master Gardeners three years ago, the Bozanic have assumed major leadership roles within the organization. Most recently, served as president, presiding over association meetings, serving as chair of the executive committee and appointing and overseeing the chairs of all standing and ad hoc committees. She acted as co-chair for the Master Gardeners largest event, the annual plant fair. As part of her plant fair responsibilities, she organized publicity, placing ads in local and regional newspapers and announcements on the air with radio stations. Her efforts helped make the 2004 plant fair an enormous success.

The Bozanics have also participated in other Master Gardener activities, such as maintaining the library's perennial garden and the Warm Springs Middle School's butterfly garden, setting up plant
displays for the Morgan County Fair and sponsoring a birthday celebration for the Senior Center. And if that wasn't enough, they started a garden club for residents of The Woods.

The Master Gardeners hope the Bozanics, who have been married for 39 years, continue to make a wonderful team for many years to come.
